| Kemblefield
Hawkes Bay
From our beginnings in July 1992, Kemblefield has grown and developed, turning a 200 hectare farm into the successful vineyard and winery it is today. Our wines are a superb combination of quality Hawke's Bay grapes and our skills as experienced winemakers. Our Distinction wines are our premium range of wines for cellaring or that special occasion.
The Distinction wines reflect more of the winemaker’s influence and have greater complexity and elegance. These are Kemblefield’s estate grown wines from which our reputation has grown.
In 1994, Kemblefield Estate Winery brought the first Zinfandel cuttings to New Zealand from Ravenswood Winery’s prestigious Old Hill Vineyard in California. We harvested the first Kemblefield Zinfandel in 2000 and bottled it as The Reserve. John crafted a superb deeply coloured purple-red wine with high alcohol and fruit concentration. With black pepper aromas and ripe berry flavours, Zinfandel is a remarkably rich wine and one to be savoured. Kemblefield Estate Winery is proud to produce our unique Zinfandel, it’s very special, absolutely delicious and something very new to New Zealand.
Wine Currently Available: Sauvignon Blanc 2004/2005. Chardonnay 2004. Zinfadel Reserva 2002, Chardonnay 2002 Distinction

Marlborough
- Sauvignon Blanc 2004: Marlborough has one of the longest ripening periods for growing grapes in the world. The spring and summer of 2004 was warm with fairly settled weather. The spring had been testing during flowering which meant crop levels were lower than normal. The autumn days were long and hot with cooler nights. This is ideal for the vines to ripen their fruit and create unique fruit flavours.
Pale straw in color with hints of green. The fruit from the cooler vineyard gives citrus and gooseberry notes which integrate well with the more tropical passion fruit characters from the warmer vineyard. This is a fuller bodied style of Sauvignon Blanc with clean racy acidity and a long lingering finish. We prefer to enjoy our Sauvignon Blanc when it is young. This is when it's youthful freshness is most enjoyed. We also find it can be enjoyed almost anytime, with anything an anyone! Gold Medal at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards, gaining Five Stars and being named in the Top Ten Sauvignon Blanc for the year in Cuisine Magazine.
Blue Gold and Top 100 award at the Sydney International Wine Competition.
- Pinot Noir 2002: Harvested in the cool of an autumn morning the fruit was transported to the winery to be processed quickly and cooled for a 5 day cold soak. During this time the fruit was hand plunged up to 5 times a day to extract colour and flavour from the berries without extracting harsh phenolics. The must was then inoculated with selected yeasts for fermentation. Once almost dry the wine was pressed off skins and transferred to a combination of once used and new French oak for malolactic fermentation and a stay of 10 months. The resulting wine has a lovely rich ruby colour. Aromas of ripe plum integrate well with subtle spicy oak. On the palate the flavours abound. Prune and black cherry with cassis again integrate with the subtle spicy oak and fine tannins. A long seductive finish is enjoyed.
We enjoy our Pinot Noir with lamb, veal, subtle game dishes and good hard cheeses.
